Living Green: 10 Eco-Friendly Choices for Everyday

They say we must look for a positive in everything that happens. That’s because there is always a reason behind everything that happens, and even if that reason is not evident at the time of the event, it eventually reveals itself to us. A case in point is the pandemic that engulfed the world not so long ago. In my opinion, this calamity gave us the opportunity to take a pause from the business of living and relook, re-evaluate, and then reboot our lives. It gave us a chance to redeem ourselves.

That was when we once again experienced the chirping of birds, the breathing of fresh, clean air, and the joy of being with ourselves and our families. There were no deadlines, no mad rushing and time stood still.

That was when we realised that, in our need to acquire all material things, we had destroyed everything that nature had bestowed on us. It also made us realise that we had to move towards a more inclusive, sustainable, and less destructive manner of living if we wished to live longer and healthier.

The lessons learned in those days cannot be forgotten, and we have to make changes in our daily lives that help us take care of our environment and all the other inhabitants of this planet. Therefore, it is time we started taking steps towards preserving and conserving what we have. We cannot let another pandemic show us the way.

Living an eco-friendly lifestyle is not only beneficial for the environment but also for our well-being. Making small, conscious choices in our daily routines can have a significant impact on reducing our carbon footprint and preserving the planet for future generations.

We share these ten simple tips for incorporating eco-friendly practices into your everyday life.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:

As much as possible, follow the three Rs—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle—as a mantra for sustainable living. Follow practical ways to minimise waste by avoiding single-use plastics, repurposing items, and properly sorting recyclables. Don’t hoard things; be prudent. Recycle and upcycle as much as you can. Get creative and innovative in your approach to sustainable living.

Choose Sustainable Transportation:

Try to reduce your carbon emissions by opting for eco-friendly transportation options such as walking, cycling, carpooling, or using public transit whenever possible. Discuss the benefits of reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promote the use of electric or hybrid vehicles.

Water Conservation:

Make everyone at home, including the domestic help, understand the importance of conserving water and offer practical tips for reducing water usage, such as fixing leaks, installing water-saving fixtures, taking shorter showers, and collecting rainwater for outdoor use. Remember, every drop counts.

Support Sustainable Food Choices:

Make environmentally conscious food choices by opting for locally sourced, organic produce, reducing meat consumption, and minimising food waste through meal planning and composting. Avoid fancy food items that are a fad and have nothing to do with your country/region.

Embrace Minimalism:

Promote the benefits of living a minimalist lifestyle, which not only reduces consumption but also promotes mindful consumption and appreciation for the things that truly matter. Remember, ‘Less is More’.

Choose Eco-Friendly Products:

Try to switch to eco-friendly alternatives for everyday products such as cleaning supplies, personal care products, and household items. Highlight the benefits of choosing products made from sustainable materials and free from harmful chemicals.

Opt for Renewable Energy:

It is essential to switch to renewable energy sources like solar or wind power for residential and commercial use. Find renewable energy providers near you.

Support Sustainable Fashion:

Support sustainable fashion brands that prioritise ethical manufacturing practices, use eco-friendly materials, and promote fair labour standards. Adopt ways to extend the lifespan of clothing through proper care and repair.

Get Involved in Community Initiatives:

Get involved in local environmental initiatives, such as community clean-up events, tree-planting projects, and advocacy campaigns. Highlight the importance of collective action in creating positive change for the planet.

Incorporating eco-friendly habits into our daily lives is a small yet significant step we can take to positively impact the environment and create a more sustainable future for generations to come. Though it may take time to see results, consistent and persistent efforts can help us achieve our goal.

We need to wake up to the need of the hour and take action to leave a healthier and cleaner planet for our children.
