Please Save Her
And then she started screaming. Her screams were so loud that the warden dropped everything to find out what was wrong. She rushed towards the room along with some other girls but found it to be locked. She knocked frantically.
“Maria, my child! Open the door! Is everything okay? Who is there with you?” the warden shouted.
Suddenly there was silence; no sound coming from the room. Was everything fine? Maria had stopped screaming.
Then they heard the Prince’s voice, “Don’t worry Maria, I will always be there”.
Maria: “But what about your marriage? Are you going to oppose your father for me? Will that be possible for you?”
From the conversation, it was clear that something was not right with them and their families.
Prince: “I will do anything for you! No matter what comes in the way, I will get married to you.”
Maria: “I’m not so sure. Even my father is not in our favour. Let’s run away as they will never support our decision.”
Prince: “I don’t think that will be possible as my father and his men are watching me continuously. And I am pretty sure they are keeping a watch on you as well.”
“Maria broke into tears; the Prince left the room. Maria banged the door shut and locked it. She didn’t open even after multiple requests from her friends. They were all worried for her. She was such a sweet girl.
A few days later, Lord Vivian came to see his daughter. He tried to convince her to stop thinking about Surya Dev and think about getting married to the boy he had chosen for her. But she paid no heed to his advice.
It had not even been six months since Prince Surya Dev Singh had left the school when news spread that he had married the Princess of Pratapgarh, a nearby State.
But despite that, he kept coming to meet Maria.
One day when they were both on their way to the hostel, Maria told him that she was three months pregnant.
Prince: “Are you sure”?
Maria: Of course I am! ( Somewhere, she still believed that he would marry her.)
But what the Prince said dashed whatever little hope she had.
Prince: ‘Maria, I won’t be able to meet you anymore. Now I have a wife, and soon I will be taking over as the King of the State. (His words broke Maria’s heart.)
“What a horrible thing to do,” I said.
Rajveer did not like my interruption at all. The way he looked at me could have unnerved anyone. I also noticed that while narrating the story, his expressions kept changing. Sometimes, he seemed to be smiling; other times, he appeared to be very angry.
He continued, “And, then came the day when everything ended, and my world was destroyed”!
“Your world?” I asked, not quite able to comprehend what he was saying.
“Yes, my world! I lost her. “She meant the world to me!” Rajveer broke down while saying this.
“That was the day when Lord Vivian came to meet Maria. He had been transferred back to India. He had got a pink gown for his daughter as he wanted to celebrate with her.
But he was in for the biggest shock of his life. When he reached the school, he couldn’t believe his eyes. The whole school was burning. Everything was on fire, and people were running helter-skelter trying to save their lives.
There was panic everywhere, and no one seemed to know where Maria was. Finally, one of the girls running towards the gate told him that his daughter was still in her room.
The Lord couldn’t believe it. He started shouting, screaming for help imploring people to help him rescue his daughter but to no avail. Nobody came forward.
Only his screams could be heard, “Somone, Please save her!” “Someone, please save her!”.
“She was no more. That bloody fire killed her. And as he said it, the tears started rolling down.
They killed her and…..”, he stopped at that point, as though he was too full up to say anything.
The sudden change in his expression was apparent even in that strange dark classroom. Fury could be seen clearly in his eyes.
“Are you okay?” I asked. He turned his face to me and quickly wiped off the tears.
He was walking up and down in the room while relating the story. At this point, he came up to me, sat down on his knees, brought his face close to mine and said, “How can someone be okay after such a tragedy? How can you even ask that?”.
His voice was a mix of anger and pain.
“I think you have taken it too seriously. It was just an incident. It would help if you did not let it bother you too much” I tried to divert his mind though I was sure that it wasn’t possible.
He smiled at me and then said, “Deepika! We can’t imagine the pain others go through and being a human being, you should not forget that being insensitive to somebody’s feelings or their pain is equivalent to hurting them”.
“I am sorry, I didn’t mean that” I quickly apologized for my words.
I knew that this friend of mine is not the kind to listen to others for too long. Like a child, he believes that he knows the best and does not like a counter-argument.
I also didn’t want him to stop. I wanted to hear the rest of the story. The story had me in its grip now. I wanted to know the rest. Maybe this had to do with his story-telling skills.
I turned to him, “What happened after that?”, “What about Lord Vivian?” “How did he handle it?” I bombarded him with questions.
He looked at me with eyes that were sad and said, “After that day, Lord Vivian was never seen. Locals claim that he too jumped into the fire and killed himself after hearing the news of his beloved daughter’s death.”
“But the biggest question in everyone’s mind was how had the fire started?”
“People couldn’t stop speculating: some people felt that it was Maria who had started the fire while others claim that the ongoing electricity work in the building had been the cause.”
“But these were only rumours. No one knew the truth.
Very few people had the guts to talk about the affair between Suryadev Singh and Maria Vivian. They were terrified of the Prince and his power.
“Do you know the truth?” I asked.
“Yes”, he nodded.
The truth could be seen in his eyes.
He continued and said, ” But before I tell you the truth, I want you to promise me that you will help them.”
Before I could react, he came to me, held my hands, looked into my eyes and said,” They need your help, Deepika, she needs your help. It has been years since I have been looking for you, waiting for you to come. It’s only you who can help her in getting out of here. Even, I am stuck here”.
All the while, he kept looking into my eyes.
At first, I was a little taken aback; then, I felt a little scared; what he had said was not making any sense to me. Instead, it was getting scarier for me.
But still, I said yes, though I don’t know why.
Listening to this, he rose, looked outside at the moon shining in the black sky. Then he closed his eyes and, after thinking for a while, said, “Deepika, before telling you what happened that day, there is something that you need to see. After that, I will tell you everything and will answer all your questions”.
Saying so, Rajveer started walking out of the room. I followed him…….
