What is happiness? It looks and feels different for everyone. But whatever your version of happiness, ultimately, it should bring you peace and a sense of inner satisfaction and contentment.
Happiness is a habit that can be cultivated by a few simple practices followed regularly.
Morning Meditation: Start your day with stillness and set positive intentions/visualizations. This instils a sense of quiet and calm, sets the tone for the day, and helps you stay focused and connected.
Daily Yoga Practice: Even just 5 minutes of stretching on the days you don’t feel like it helps reduce stress, symptoms of depression and feelings of anxiety while boosting your self-esteem and energy levels.
Sleep on time: It’s not only about how much you sleep; it’s mostly about what time you sleep that matters most. The body typically goes into repair mode between 10 pm-2 am. Hence, switch off those lights before 10 pm to reap the maximum benefits, and enhance brain function and emotional well-being.
Hydrate: Water is the elixir of life. It helps to keep everything fluid in your body and mind. Always drink water sitting down, at room temperature and with positive intentions. This allows it to reach the deeper tissues while cleansing and nourishing your body.
Oil your body: Either before your shower or after, but daily, give yourself an oil massage. This is a practice of self-love which helps to ground you and relieves anxiety, nourishes your skin, tissues and muscles.
Smile: Smiling causes the brain to release dopamine, which makes us happier. So even if you don’t feel like it, just force that smile to see what happens! Start your day by smiling at yourself in the mirror.
Eat healthy: It’s not only how much you eat but also what you eat and what time you eat that matters. Do include more fresh foods into your diet, try to eat warm, nourishing foods, and remember if you are planning to indulge, make sure it’s at lunchtime. Dinner should always be the lightest meal of the day and quit snacking altogether in between meals.
Spend time with friends and loved ones: We are social beings, and we need connection. It is essential to cultivate relationships, so fix up a coffee or lunch date and just chill; this helps lift your spirits tremendously!
Breathe deep: Breathing is a practice we take for granted! Most of us shallow breathe, but it is essential to remind ourselves to breathe deeply throughout the day. Become mindful of taking slow, long, deliberate breaths. You will be amazed at what this does to your stress levels.
Declutter: Clean up your spaces! Put everything in its place and throw away anything you have not used in a year; chances are you’ll never use it. It is incredible what this simple practice can do to calm your mind.
Spend time with nature: A 30min walk outdoors or spending time in your balcony amidst your plants has been medically proven to lower your blood pressure and cure depression.
Let go of the past: Life is to be lived and enjoyed! Love your journey of life; own it with pride! It’s your life! Live it king/queen size! Nobody has it easy; we all have our pains and losses….but ultimately know one thing for sure…life goes on, and so must you.
